- Should My Child be Taller?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I have two young sons, one aged 8 and the other approaching his 5th
- birthday. In comparing the two, I have become quite fearful that my younger
- son is not growing as he should. At his age, the older boy was a full inch
- and a half taller. Could it be a problem with hormones? I would be relieved
- to know that a medicine exists that can be used to help my son grow, and
- wonder if you can tell me how to go about getting some? Any help you can give
- me would do a great deal to reduce a mother's fears.
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: Let me try to calm some of your fears at the outset. Yes, there
- certainly are medications which can be used to help. But not every child who
- seems to be too short may be abnormal, or have a condition which requires
- medication. Normal heights for any age can differ considerably, and the
- difference between the two boys may be within the limits of normal. Children
- also grow at different rates at different stages of their development, and can
- catch up during growth spurts that can and do occur. For children between 3
- and 12 years of age, a growth problem would be considered only if his growth
- is less than 2 inches per year over a prolonged time.
- Since genetics plays such a large role in the size of offspring, the
- average heights of the families, both yours and your husband's, should also be
- considered. Tall children seldom develop in families of average or short
- stature.
- While growth hormone deficiencies do exist, such situations are
- relatively rare and affect only 15-20,000 children in this country. There are
- many other conditions which must first be investigated, including a poor diet,
- troubles with digestion, stress, diabetes, a kidney disorder or even an
- undetected heart abnormality. When these situations are detected and
- corrected, growth patterns often return to normal.
- To detect a lack of growth hormone, a number of tests are used, including
- blood, urine and x-ray examinations. Growth hormone levels in the blood can
- also be determined. When it has been decided that a growth hormone is
- necessary, it can be given by injection, either daily or several times a week.
- Often the parents are trained to perform these injections, but always under
- the supervision of your child's physician.
- Good therapy also includes discussions that involve the emotional and
- psychological attitudes of the whole family. It may be a difficult time for
- the youngster who must endure the comments of his playmates, as well as the
- parents who suffer along with their child. Talking out these feelings, and
- developing a clearer understanding of the situation as well as establishing
- rational goals, does much to ease the pain and fears.
- You, and other parents who want to know more about their children's
- growth, may wish to contact the Human Growth Foundation. They offer a quiz
- (answers included) that can test and increase a parent's knowledge about
- growth, entitled "Do You Know How Your Child Should Grow?" Its easy to
- understand True/False format may provide you with the answers to some
- questions I have not covered here.
- In addition you can obtain a free, life size growth chart that can help
- you track your son's growth. Both these items can be obtained by writing to:
